Reflexology is a therapeutic treatment applied to the feet and sometimes the hands and ears. Reflexology is considered to be a holistic healing technique that aims to treat the individual as a whole, in order to induce a state of balance and harmony in the body. It is based on the belief that there are reflex areas on the feet (and hands) corresponding to all body parts including major organs. I have been certified in integrative reflexology which is based on 4 theories.
- Structural alignment...a fascial model from Ida Rolf (the creator of Rolfing). The feet are called the tatteltellers. They can let you know where a client is holding their fascial tension.
- Zones...It is believed that zones in the foot correspond to the zones that follows the body up from the foot. Eunice Ingham developed the zones into reflexology that is most practiced today.
- Meridians...Meridians are energy pathways. The history of reflexology refers back to Dr. Bressler of Austria crediting the oriental energy pathways as the precursor to zones, also considered energy pathways.
- Proprioceptors...The nerves that tell you where you are located in space. They are the information gathering nerves. Your feet are intelligent and tell you where your body is out of balance.
Applying pressure to specific areas on the feet can affect internal organs and body systems and therefore promote good health. Reflexology has been shown to help relieve migraine headaches, sinus problems, digestive problems, circulatory, tension and stress.
